Hey guys,
I have a 29 gallon tank which i am raising a few baby discus in. It is bare bottom (I took the advise of the guys on here) with some potted plants and driftwood. Right now I have an Aquaclear 3 stage 70 gallon filter on it. There are no problems with my current setup but I recently decided I wanted to turn my spare ten gallon into a wet dry filter. First of all would it be worth or will I get the same result and is it is, can someone direct me to a place with a good draw up of a ten gallon wet/dry sump. Its my first time with these filters and do not know much about them. Thanks for all your help!

You will gain some water volume, but unless you have a drilled tank, you will need an PVC overflow. Plans for both can be found in the DiY section.

I have the other tank but won't be able to put the discus in there for another year or so. So would you guys recommend doing the wet dry or should i leave it alone (Will it make a significant difference for the water quality for the discus)?

Also, I don't understand how u balance the amount of water coming out of the tank with the amount getting pumped back in.....

You balance the water levels by using an overflow. This will only allow the water level to drop to a certain point. Below that point, the water won't drain to the sump, there for letting the pump catch up. Of course if the pump is too strong, then you will run into problems, but those can be alleviated. The biggest benefit to adding a w/d to your tank will be to increase the physical water volume. This can also be achieved by a canister filter, and may be much less of a headache for you.

At this point i already have a spare ten gallon tank and a pump that I can use. On top of that I have been looking into the materials and it seems to be much cheaper to do the sump over the canister.

Another question, how do I do the overflow with out cutting up my tank or having a huge box hanging in the tank?

Btw, thanks Wildfya for suggesting the bare bottom a while ago. Even by putting the plants in pots along with the bare bottom made the care of the discus and the water parameters so much easier. The plants even seem to be doing better. Oh, I only did the switch to bare bottom on Saturday and the Discus are very jumpy still. Will that get better when they get used to the new setup?

For a non-drilled tank, here's the PVC overflow:

Although to answer you real question, on a 29 gallon planted tank, a sump seems kind of overkill.
If it were my 29 gal, I'd buy a cheap (but good) canister, something like an Eheim 2213 and be done with it.

Its a strange variation of a planted tank. It is bare bottom with some plants in clay pots. I am using this tank to raise a few baby discus, thats why I am considering the sump.
