Check the attached diagram.

So here is my idea. What if instead of draining the water into a sump to go through the scrubbies, what if instead, water came out through the over flow into the PVC piping. Within the first portion of PVC is filter media(pink) for the mech filtration. Then that water is split into multiple pipes where the pipes are filled with scrubbies(orange dots). Then all the water is fed back into one pipe, through a pump and back into the tank. Does anyone think this will work? Any suggestions?

Also, note the split is on a Y to ensure that all the pipes are being used. Also, the pipes will need to be smaller so that its not all going down one pipe and through one thing of scrubbies.

What do you think?

hmmmm i dont know, seems like it would work but it would be a pain down the road. i kinda like to see whats going on in my sump.

also, i dont think it will work because the pump will not stay primed, i think, since it wont be submersed in water

That really wouldn't be a wet/dry then, that would be more of a canister filter.

the site will only show Jpeg's and GIF's so you will just need to save your files in Jpegs...

looks like it will all clog up eventually

I agree maintainance would be a pain and with everything submerged it's just an overly complicated canister. If you want an alternative to W/D sumps look into HOT biowheels.

i would really worrie about clogging and scrubbies bio balls you mean i think the bio balls need to have the water being splashed on them that makes oxygen and the bacteria grow sumps are real easy to build real easy

All that is, is a homemade module filter. Look up Pentair Rainbow Lifeguard systems, you've essentially re-discovered their concept.
