I was thinking, while I was looking at my sump, could you put a finer filter pad between the drip tray and bio-balls? I was thinking that it would help filter out more of the fine particles. Has anyone done this? Any problems with doing it? In my drip try I have the blue bonded filter pad, which catched most of the larger stuff, but of course is not very fine. Just a thought.

Any recommendations on what type of filter pad to use?

The smallest filter pads I have seen is 50 micron. I will be switching to them soon.

Yeah I saw the 50 micron pads. The only thing I can see wrong with placing a filter pad between the tray and balls, is that if the pad gets real dirty in one spot then it is not going to let the water trickle evenly over the balls.

So instead, place the pad into the sump part between the balls section and pump section. I dont see why that wouldnt work.

I buy the 50 micron pads and cut them to size so they fit inside my drip tray. works great havn't experienced any problems whatsoever.

If your not using one now, it will help...I wouldn't suggest changing from the top position tho if your alreading using it there.

Putting it on top (under the course filter material) will keep the bio-balls cleaner.

I use felt from the cloth store (there are several grades)(same place I get my foam). Use only white or natural, not colors and rinse in hot water before use (I'm just extra careful).

And I use two different grades (courseness) of filter material too, so, yes, that makes 3 layers of filter material on top of the scrubbies, with an aerator in the sump under it all.

I havent starting running the other pad yet. Do you ever have a problem with the fine pad getting dirty enough that the water backs up and goes over the edges of the tray?

i did it on the drip tray works well but you have to watch it as the pad will clog quickly and can overflow and cause a minor flood

No, I keep several pads on hand (in a tank with the extra sponge filters) and change them before that can happen, usually right after a gravel vacuuming.

And when I put them inI make a small depression in the center to channel the dirt but doesn't seem to effect the drip area.
