I need some help to decide on a new filtration for a 180 gallon tank. I am either going to do an FX5 or a overflow with a wet/dry. I have never done an wet/dry or sump before. And just alittle curious on how to get it started. I know the basics. But what can I look out for so I do not screw it up and drain the tank while I am at work.

A wet/dry will do everything that a canister will, plus:
You can hide equipment such as heaters, uv sterilizers, etc.
it adds volume to the system for additional stabilility
it's easier to maintain ( canister fanboys will argue this point, but it doesn't get easier than changing a prefilter......while the filter is running)
you can isolate fish if you need to
use more than one pump for total system redundancy
you get superior gas exchange
if you get in a pinch you can add another tank to the same filter relatively easily.
and most importantly, they can be built for MUCH less cost than a high end canister

The list can be longer, but those are the main advantages that I like.

Unless you want a low maintenance planted tank, a wet/dry is simply better. It will make your/your fishes life much easier

I have several canisters that I would GLADLY trade for a wet/dry filter.

As rally said, wet/dry would be best. Is this a new 180g or are you thinking of replacing your 4 xp3, fluval 3 and Ac110 filters?

Replacing the existing setup, not happy with the xp3's right now. The two power heads the Ac110 powerhead and the fluval 4plus power head may or may not stay on the tank. I have a 55 gallon tank that I am debating on using.

Thanks for the replies

RALLYSMAN again, has said it best. But after all he is the president of the WDWDA (Wet/Dry World Domination Association):headbang2

He's got me sold on wet/dry's. He just helped me build my first one and now I will be switching over my 180 as well. Completely worth the work. I will be selling my xp3 very soon.

That's about right:D

I've never dealt with canisters, most HOBs and Undergravel filters (on a side note I did have pretty good success with them for a year). However, I just finished my w/d and I love it. It took a bit to get everything squared away, but I don't think I would go back to anything else. The only mistake I've really made is getting a pump that pumps far more water than I needed moved. With very little work, I can pump more want into my tank than the overflow can handle.
