so i have a DIY wet dry, which is probably the root of the problem. and the overflow that i have in it makes a ton of noise as the water goes down the PVC outlet ...

just wondering if there is an easy solution??

my pump is at 900 g/h, and so i have 2 U-tubes going into the box to keep up. the overflow is divided into 2 sections, so that it should have a waterfall effect over the small section into the larger section before dropping down the pipe ... but the water level in the overflow box is lower than the tank water, which is also a problem, but its the only way i can get the outflow from the box to match the inflow from the pump (and not flood or drain the tank obviously)

its basically a sucking or gurgling noise, i would assume because water AND air are going down, instead of just water

I usually put a rolled/folded towel over the overflow box behind the tank. It helps to drown out the gargling noise.

so after reading that site i think my issue is that basically my overflow has a "full syphon" instead of just a partial (on purpose, so that the intake/outtake rate is the same)
will i be able to get the rates to match with a durso standpipe ?

I had a great (not!) time when i set up my first wet/dry last year...

I found this thread to be very helpful to set up a quieter solution. (Hope I haven't mashed the board rules with my first post! lol)

My return pump runs about 1100gph and the 40mm durso handles the flow fine and restarts etc no problem after power outage. I found the durso to still be a bit noisy although a vast improvement. The addition of the full siphon component was the real winner. The drone of my return pump is much louder than the plumbing now

If I lose power the siphon breaks but the durso has the capacity for full flow on restart and the extra noise is a giveaway to a power-outage. I usually just leave it until my next tank maintenance and restart the siphon side of things.

I doubt you have a full siphon in your set-up. It would be next to impossible to balance a full siphon alone to your return pump output.

The durso will not change the flow rate. it will just quiet the gurgling noise.

couldnt you just use a U section that turns 180 degrees and add a short straight piece to the end or is there a need for the T and the upper section on the "Durso Standpipe?"

I'm no pro at this but I just set one up so I'll give you my 2cents worth. Those 1" "J" tubes are designed for 600gph. so try just one. See if you can equal out the flow that way. If that works and you want more turnover you will have to buy a bigger pump. I have a pump that is 1800gph. I run 3 "j" tubes and had to turn down the pump a little. Here are some picture of how I set mine up. Never mine the tubes coming out of them. Also here is a link to quiet the overflow box. http://home.everestkc.net/jrobertson57268/HGB/HGB_construction.html
Hope this helps.

The purpose of the tee section (the vertical section above the water line) in the Durso is to allow air to escape and eliminate the gurgling sound. The standpipe is also configured to keep the water level in the overflow high to eliminate the splashing sounds.
