I’m setting up a predrilled 135g tank. The tank Has 2 drain and 2 fill bulk heads. The previous owner had the two fill lines runnning off one pump. He split the line (like a Y) coming off the pump back upto the two fill pipes.

Would you plumb this the same way or would you use 2 seperate pumps with seperate lines to their own fill pipes?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would reuse the plumbing if at all possible. If you are concerned with flow restriction of the tee, get a larger pump and problem solved. Many of us (myself included) do this.

Is the pump submersible or external? Typically external pumps have better head pressure and will be much less impacted by a tee split.

I would use the same as well. Use single return from pump and split. For a 135G, there are many DC submersible pump that should provide sufficient turnover volume.

Consider using loclines at the ends of the two output for the returns for flexibility.

Thanks for the recoss. I currently have a submersibke 1200gph “quiet one” pump.

The tank haa 2 lockline outputs already in place.

After think about it a bit, my sump has a hole for an external pump to be installed. I think I’ll gonthat way instead of a submersibke pump. Any recos on the BEST pump to buy?

You are probably going to hate that Quiet One pump, because they are anything but quiet. I would highly recommend a DC pump as they don't vibrate as badly as the AC pumps.

I had good luck with my QuietOne pump. I would start by using the Quiet one pump that you already have and use the hole in the sump to plump the return line from the pump out of the sump. Start with what you have and see how everything works before you start spending more money. You might need a much bigger pump or maybe even a smaller pump. Or it is very likely that your QuietOne works perfectly.

When I upgraded tanks I also upgraded pumps and I am quite pleased with the Jebao DC pump I purchased. I really like the "Feed" feature which lowers the pump to a minimal flow for 5 minutes then resumes the flow to the previous flow level. My next pump will be another Jebao and will be much bigger than I need because the pump can be easily throttled down.

I prefer internal pumps. The water surrounding them seems to help keep them quiet.

Two pumps or one pump I don't think will matter much. Two pumps does give you a bit of redundancy but, that said, I have always just run a single pump in my sumps.

Ok so I’ve built my stand, and will finalize the last bit of plumbing and start the system up this weekend. It’s pretty simple.
- 2 Durso style drains
- branched check valve for returns
- 30 gallon wet dry
- 15 gallons of bio balls
- external Iwaki pump with ball valve
Ordered some new lighting and my new driftwood is currently being water logged.

Some pictures.
