i have a 25 gal wet/dry i was reading about Fluidized Bed Filters and desided i want to get one can i just take out the bio balls and replace them with large foam pads and make my wet/dry in to a mech filter?

You could, but you shouldn't, since it's not easy to wash all those foam pads you fill in that space, once they're dirty! :grinno:

ok ty i like the idea of the Fluidized Bed Filters and want to get one but would like to attach it to my sump out put but i need a mech filter so whats the best way to turn a wet dry in to a mech and still maintain it easily?

if i just got foam in bulk could i just replace it every so offten

I wouldn't turn my wet/dry into strictly a mechanical filter. The fluidized bed filters do have a lot of surface area for colonization of bacteria, but the flow through the bed can and will get interrupted, causing the sand to stop being "fluidized" (and its a pain to get re-started). At that point you will have no biological filter. You have to set up your filters to be redundant and not rely on any one filter to do solely one task.
