Changing my 180 gal salt to freshwater.

I have an overflow, down a wide (about 4") tower/pipe to the sump.

I had bio balls in the pipe to the sump. Recently saw the Seachem product matrix. Was wondering if it might be a good idea to use it in the pipe to the sump (which is basically a wet dry), and/or in the sump.

Which of the two products bio balls or matrix - might work better (or any other suggestions welcomed), in the tower from my tank to my sump and in the sump?

Also, do bio balls work well submerged in water?

And last, with a fresh water tank, how often recommended to wash out the bio balls / matrix?

Any advice? Any comments?

Thanks, Mark

use both of the bio media's! its always best to have different types of surface areas. i use straws sponge and scouring pad as my bio media. u wont need to wash them if the water goes through a layer of filter fiber or prefilter first.
