wet dry vs canister

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A repost:

Advantage for Sumps:

1) great for DIY
2) Potentially can be made very cheaply
3) Open system
4) maintenance can be easier
5) potentially have larger capacity than canisters
6) easier to setup special water flow: like unidirectional flow of a riverine system.

con:

1) Open system - easy for people like my six year old to mess with(or other things to get in)
2) not as quiet(esp wet-dry)
3) Some uses old secondary tank may be prone to leaks
4) unless used with a canister, difficult to have a backup in case of say pump failure
5) have drilling diy elements that may dismay users
6) if stand is premade, it limits the size of the sump

For canisters

1) easy to setup
2) modular design easily backed up or design redundancy in the system
3) closed system not easy to tamper with

cons:

1) for the easiest setup, hard to conceal intake and output ports
2) Can be hard to service
3) Some modules maybe prone to leak due to faulty O rings, lid design etc
4) more expensive for better models...

7) Also you can hide heaters and other equip, and have an isolation tank.

I am currently running both. The canister is a pain to pull from under the tank and take apart and clean. Once you have pulled out the pads and cleaned it then you have to prime it again to get the water flowing. Its a hassle and i dread doing it. The Wet dry however collects all the fish waste at the top of the box and all i have to do is pull out the pads, rinse/replace and we are good to go. I clean the wet dry once a week and it only adds an extra 5 mins to my water change. The canister adds an extra 20 mins or so and i always make a mess trying to prime it again. I also don't think at this point i need both, but its nice to have a backup in case something happens to one or the other.

With wet dry, u can build it almost as big as ur tank. This means more media capacity and bigger water volume. That means better water. Easy to maintain and better mech filter. In case of pump failure, cheaper to have spare pump then spare canister and no need to move media. Biggest con is with a leak. Once it does it's a lot more work to replace it. So advise build/buy a new sump tank. Nv reuse old tanks.

The lack of ability to pick up crap from the bottom is another common concern, that's why a combination of sump and a high water flow canister is rather popular.

Simple way to solve this is by adding some glass shrimp or a few swordtails. They will keep the bottom of the sump really clean.
