I am thinking of swapping out the wet dry on my 125 for an fx5. The wet dry is too much of a hassel and seems to make more of a mess than anything else. I have on the 125 2 ac110s and a xp3 in addition to the w/d. What are you guys thoughts on making this switch, I know that I will be losing a ton of biological filtration, but I plan to combat this by stuffing the fx5 with bio media. Any thought or opinion on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

Well, just make sure you load the FX5 up with bio media,...put media that was in your w/d into the fx5. But with your HOB's you should be alright..

wet/dry filters are way better than any cannister IMO..

i love my fx5, but if you think a w/d makes a mess.....wait until you try to clean the fx5. maybe its just me, and my complete inability to NOT get water on a floor, but mine makes a good amount of mess when pulling the baskets out of the can, and when breaking the seal to open the lid.

on a positive side, i would 110% recomend one if you really dont want the w/d anymore. mine along with an xp3 is keeping my 250g tank clean and balanced, and it has a pacu and oscar over 12" and another pacu pushing 20". thats a hell of a bio-load, not even including the other fish.

There is a simpler way.

1. While pump is on, close and slowly remove intake hose.
2. Wait for water in the canister to be pumped out (watch tank level)
3. Close output valve and unplug filter and remove output tube.

No mess. Done.

how does your wetdry make more of a mess?
Thats what I'm wondering. To clean my wet/dry I turn off the pump, pull the old filter wool off the top, throw it in the bin, replace it with a new piece and turn the pump back on.
If someone can explain how cleaning a canister filter could be easier or less-messy than that I'm all ears...

I am sorry that my wanting to replace my messy wetdry that requires more maitenance that my tank personally offends some of you. To the others, I got the fx5 hooked up today, and love the thing, its quieter than I imagined and the features on this thing are great. I filled two trays with bio media to combat the loss. As for why I replaced it, all my tanks are in my studio apt, aka where watch tv, sleep, cook, eat, everything is in one room. The w/d was loud, and there always seemed to be water around it. Apparently the air here is really dry and waking up to the submersible pump sucking air at 4 am is not my cup of tea. The w/d is for sale for $100 bucks.
