wet dry vs. fx5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Better in terms of what? Filtration capacity? Cost effectient? In either case, I think a sump is hard to beat based on DIY cost, mechanical and bio filtration, and ability to customize and remove equipment from the tank.

Then I would say a sump. You can fit so much more media in a sump. You can run a wet/dry drip system using bio balls or pot scrubbies, or you can you all submerged using ceramic media. For mechanical, you can run various filter pads, or my personal favorite, small micron filter socks

you could build a sump for alot less and sumps ussually have alot more room for bio material , but ussually need to tweek them to get them perfect.... but if you want to basically just plug and play and aren't worried about the money then I would go with a FX5

but to me I think a sump is a better choice ....

thanks for the input im going to be running a drip system with bio balls and im also going to load all other kinds of media in there to help out.

you should take a look at some of Jose's threads, he know his stuff ! all his tanks ALWAYS look amazing! I am going to be using some of his designs when I get my 360 gallon going in a few months :) can't beat them they are cost effective and a heck of alot better filtration :)

Thanks! This is the picture I show to everybody. It's a 10g sump on my 57g planted tank. Simple as can be, dual filter socks on the inlet, basket of cermic media in the middle, and a pump on the other end. Great water quality and the water is crystal clear! See the link in my sig for more details

And cleaning it so easy. You have to carry the big heavy FX5 outside, take it all apart, clean all the sponges and everything else, then put it all back together.

With my wet dry, I slide out a couple of trays, put a new piece of quilt batting in each tray, then slide the trays back in and done.
