Has anyone raised a solo African cichlid as a wet pet , like we commonly do with the large American cichlids.
I've always wanted a large African cichlid mainly a venustus or a livingstoni, but I don't have a tank they require as a group and I personally don't like the look of overcrowded tanks common with the Africans.

I kept 4 livingstoni in a 6 ft tank (close, but not quite overcrowded) and they were quite stunning (2 males and 2 females)

I grew them out with some Coptodon zillii, which outgrew the tank.

There are many other large Africans that would make great solo "wet pets
Lepidiolamprologus elongatus

Oreochromis tanganykae (which gets over a foot long, and beautifully colored when mature.

I know of that I was trying to ask for the non commonly kept fish as wet pet. If I had the tank adequate for a butti I would certainly have one. But thr max I can have is a 4*18" Footprint, so what I meant was can I keep a venustus or a livingstoni in a 75 or 90 gallon with / without maybe some small barbs or giant danios ?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Heterotilapia buttikoferi as a solo wetpet.

I was thinking this as well. In my experience they always end up alone anyways. The few that I've had eventually got to a point where they wouldn't tolerate any other fish in the tank.
