I have a 3" female yellow lab mbuna cichlid that has always been very entertaining and interactive. She was very fun to watch - typical instinctive mbuna behavior, digging sand pits, holding unfertilized eggs, building nests, protective, etc... until recently. About 2 months ago I redid my 10g tank in which she has always resided in. I changed out the fugly gravel for play sand. Now she hides 24/7. Doesn't come out, not even at night, will eat but only if the food is brought right up to her face and she feels like eating. Her tankmate is but 1 south american bumblebee catfish. Labeled as an asian bumblebee cat but turned out to be otherwise. I feed her nls. The light bulb went out about 2 weeks ago so no light in her tank. She has a heater set to 80°. The filter is a 20 year old hob something. Really crappy filter.

Do you think she will ever be back to normal? I'd like to see her again, what can I do to make her more social, so she'll come out again?

A few pics of setup I took 1 min ago.

Could the sand be part of the problem? you said it liked to dig a lot, now with the new sand it isnt digging anymore, maybe thats stopping it from behaving normally because it doesnt like the new sand

does the sand have rougher edges than previous gravel?
did you change around other decor too?

eat it.

Anyway, does it still poop okay as in no white stingy poop? What have you feeding it? try a three day fast if he is fat like your old catfish and test his appetite again...

I've found that they don't do we'll outside of a group. Never had success with them. I've also found that they have very sensitive stomachs. It's a fish that's on my "never buy again" list.
