hey guys im kind of new to sump style filters, and im in the middle of creating my own as i have now got a spare 33g tank,
my question is, is it better to have a wet/dry or just a wet sump.
i see alot of people with wet/dry and im not totally sure on the reason behind this. the sump im building is going to be pretty much totally biological with a bit of a prefilter in the first chamber.
i was thinking if i had a pure wet sump i could add another 30g of water to my tank, and i figure the more water the better...

i would love to hear some opinions on the subject.
thanx.
Ronin.

Oxygen levels in the water and biological filtration rates will be better with a wet/dry. The amount of water in your system isn´t as important as what you do with it.

i was planning on having a few air stones in my sump, would that be ok as well?

Place them under the media.

:iagree:

How big is the main tank?

the main tank is 150g filtration on it right now is a AQ500 and a Rena XP4 and now adding the sump
and ya i was going to put the air stones under the media as i have a 2.5inch space under the media, i used the eggcrate light covers from home depot above and below the media to hold it all in place.
i'll post a pic in a bit showing what i meen

heres some pics of my sump,
im just in the testing process right now as im running water through it just making sure everthing is working while im waiting on my overflow to arrive(didnt want to try making one of these myself) anyways heres what i have so far.
as you can see the 2.5inch gap i have under the media so i can slip in a few airstones.

any feedback is welcome on my first attempt at a sump filter, (everything was made with stuff i had sitting around except for the media and tank i got cause it was going to be tossed out)

Looks great. Are you sure this is the first time you've built a sump?
