Ok so my 8" JD was rehomed into a 55 gal all by himself about 3 months ago, took him a good month or so to be comfortable enough to beg for food again (his favorite past time). Now I don't vary his diet too much if at all, but I decided one day he'd get a little treat and cut him off half a worm. He's eaten worms multiple times before, but when that worm hit the water he bolted to the other side of the tank and hit the glass a few times before taking cover. I left the worm in the tank over night to find that he hasn't touched it and was still in the other cave. Now I know these guys are supposed to be skittish but I've never seen anything like that before. That was a week or two ago and he's still not begging for food. Guess it's just pellets from now on haha.

Yeah it's funny how some aggressive fish like JD's, GT's etc can get quite skittish, whereas community fish are very curious and take to biting my hands as i perform maintenance etc. I'm guessing it's just built in defence mechanisms and instinct to run, but for me it definitely spoils the enjoyment sometimes haha, especially if you're trying to show off big cichlids to visitors.

I had it happen to my Oscar and six silver dollars a few months back, I thawed out a medium sized prawn; tossed it into the tank, and within seconds the Oscar was laying in the corner traumatised while the dollars bounced around till they hid in every nook and cranny they could find. The only fish that touched the prawn was the single tiger barb in the tank, it was pretty comedic at the time
