What a good affordable pump for a 90gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whats the pump for? Circulation only? To return water from a sump? Power an under gravel filter?

For circulation I would look into a "prop style" circulation power head. Hydor, VorTech,SEIO.
For moving water from piont A to point B as in a sump return, for the money, QuetOne(Lifegard), Eheim, Maxi-Jet(Marineland), MagDrive(MD series)
For general utiliy, there are alot of no-name brands available at the local fish store and online...without a clear purpose described, its hard to make a suggestion.

BTW, my drawer full of cheap pumps and powerheads is a testament to the old saying,"you get what you pay for." Don't go CHEAP and expect QUIET and RELIABLE.

JUST MY 2¢

So i can use a power head for my 30gal sump? To return water from a sump. Its for my 90 gal tank i baught it as a whole package and the damn pump was broken.

Thinking about going with the maxi jett as my return pump which models would you guys suggest. Thanks

QuietOne's are pretty darn reliable, quiet, and inexpensive. I've never heard a bad thing about them. This is why I just bought another one (for a project over-sump for a 26g, so its small)

For 90, a turn-over of 5-6 times per hour will mean you need to be circulating 450-540gph. As power heads go, depending on the head pressure, only those rated for higher pressure should be used. Maxi Jet is a great power head, even "customizable"(check You-Tube), but they dont make great sump returns. For the money, you could get a QuietOne3000 or 4000 and outperform the MaxiJet. If you do go with Marineland for the return, get the Utility Submerible, not the power head.

In the beginning of your thread you were not very clear...

Thanks for any infos

Thus you got the first two answers suggesting Powerheads. For creating circulation within the tank these answers are completly correct...

But then you added:

Only now have you clarified that we are not talking about a powerhead placed in a 90 gal tank to create circulation, but are indeed talking about a "return pump" for a sump...

Powerheads are not designed to stand up to substantial head pressure.

Instead you will want to review water pumps... There are several quality brands to choose from. First determine the desired flow rate... then determine your head pressure (measure from the surface of the water in your sump to the surface of the water in yoru aquarium)... then review pumps that will perform at your desired rate at your given head pressure...

In the future try to be more clear in your questions so you can be offered more accurate advice...
