I am thinking about getting rid of my two Cichlasoma boliviensis and getting 1 rarer, cooling looking acara or port cichlid. it needs to be pieceful and only get about 6-7" max. What would you guys/gals do? also can you provide pics because when i google them i get fish that don't even look close to the same but have the same name.

Aequidens patricki or Aequidens sp. 'Jenaro Herrara'.

I think it would be what is avalable to you. Look around at your shops or online and see whats out there.
I could list a bunch of cichlids but you probably wouldnt be able to find them.

Aequidens sp. atabapo perhaps though I've heard that they can sometimes be a handfull, but that's just second hand info. That or Aequidens sp. Jenaro Herrera. They aren't particularly aggressive and mine did well with other cichlids, though I wouldn't suggest putting either species with other acaras except compatable members of the opposite sex.

If your the patient sort, Rapps and Davis sometimes have some uncommon stuff on their stock lists. Might take a while till something comes around but it could certainly be worth the wait for that once3 in a blue moon find.

ya i have the atadapo but its a little to aggressive, i tried it and he killed 3 fish in two days. there were no other acaras in the tank. everyone else has grown a lot more than him so i could try it again but it would be risky. ya i could wait because i will be ordering from him in a while once spring rolls around.

Well, if you have room to move a few things around you could always shoot for a true A. rivulatus. (And no I'm not trying to start a true vs false GT debate) Admitedly though, even though it's not exactly a very common fish it's still pretty much the same as keeping any other GT. I did take a peek at Rapps site a little bit earlier and he had some A. diadema in stock. Not particularly rare but a very nice looking and fairly peacefull acara.
