I'm in the process of setting up my 120g freshwater tank. It won't be stocked too heavily at all - I'm thinking a Pacu with a big pleco and then maybe a couple bala sharks. I've always believed you can never have too much filtration but I was thinking of pairing my 2 AquaClear 110's with the Fluval FX5 and to me that does seem overkill.

I want *something* to pair with these AquaClears for primarily bio filtration. I was initially thinking of a wet/dry but I'm not familiar with those and they look too complex to setup and maintain properly. That leads me to a canister. If the FX5 is overkill, then I'm thinking the Filstar XP4. Either one I would just load up with bio media.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Travis

Pacu in a 120g is not lightly stocked. I would go with a XP3 or a eheim classic 2217. Either with the AC110s would more then handle any bioload you should have in that size tank.

Get rid of the others and buy just one fx5 you will be good to go. They do a great job.

Seriously? I was kicking that idea around but that just doesn't seem to be enough. Plus, shouldn't I have some surface agitation for added oxygen to the water? That's the main reason I use HOB's is because of the great surface agitation.

I like the suggestion so far of pairing my 110's with a XP3 - because that would be the cheapest option (but for a few bucks more, wouldn't it just be better to step up to the XP4?)

With the XP4 you get one more basket so you can hold more media, but the actual flow rate is only about 15 gph more. Not worth the money IMO.

If you're set on keeping the HOBs then just toss a FX5 on there... there's no such thing as overkill when it comes to filtration for most people.

You will be golden with just a pacu, they grow fast but I've seen well manicured tanks about your size and they have a pack of pacus in the tank.

My old 125g Tropheus tank ran this for filtation...
2x Eheim 2262 (all filled with only Eheim ehfisubstrat pro)
Pro-Clear300 wet/dry w/ MagDrive12 return pump
2x Ecotech Vortech Mp40w

Personally to tell you the truth, I wouldn't add anything unless the water parameters warranted adding another filter. I used to have a 125g with a pair of red devils 8.5 & 11" and four suncats 9-10". All I had filtering was a pair of AC110s the tank got weekly 50% water changes, had more then enough bio filtration.
