Hello all, I am setting up an african fish tank, so far I have 3 ctenopoma acutirostre and a sengal. I was thinking off adding an african cichlid, however I dont have any experiance with africans. What, if any, would work with these fish, and stay reletively small (6" and under preferably) thanks

Before we can answer your question what size is the tank now- and/or what can you definitely upgrade to in the future?

BTW, Do you currently have a brackish setup or freshwater?

Answer these quick questions and I assure you, you'll get spammed with sick stocking ideas.

Ok. Maybe the fish gods are asleep.

My two cents.

You can grow them out in the 29, depending on the size of the bichir. My past senegals were always chill and laid back, but they could easily damage a leaf fish.

If you havent delt with african cichlids, I suggest you try them in a species only tank first.

Your 29 gallon may seem plentiful, but depending on your setup, and breaks in line of sight(in terms of decoration/rocks)- the stock list you're considering is a lil iffy. Parameters aren't that far off, but even with pristine clean water, its your current footprint that would force you to upgrade much sooner.

I've had peacocks with two senegals in the past successfully but ended up selling the bichir for a species only tank. If you wanted this you would end up having to upgrade to a 75+ gal tank.

would a turquoise jewel cichlid work? or would that be too agressive for the Ctenopoma? The tank has several breaks in the line of sight, it is heavily planted

Cool. Get those pics up!
Did you get multiple or single specimen? I've kept jewels in the past but never the turquoise variation. I got them from this very interesting lady- i stepped into her house and bam!- all you could hear was filtration. she had about 15 small tanks full of africans- just in the living room...
