and im looking for a pleco/ catfish/ algae eater for the tank. id prefer a pleco but ive heard that most crave slime coat so are there any that dont eat slime coat? if no plecos would work id prefer algae eater recomendations. i think i have diatoms and while id usually wait till it goes away this tank is downstairs in my kitchen and my family wants the algae gone plus ive wanted a larger pleco anyway. such as the rhino pleco. thanks!

Plecos are only a danger to the slime coats of fish like rays, where they could potentially damage the disc by trying to chew on it like a piece of wood. This is only possible because rays are on the bottom of the tank and can't necessarily move away.

It's not like plecos are going to hunt down your other, more mobile fish and strip them of their coats. I don't think a pleco could catch anything on your stock list if it wanted to, and if it tried they'd just move.

Not true at all. Plecos will suck on bichirs and while they may not "chew holes in them" they will cause problems like making them prone to infection. Browse the Poly subforum and you can find plenty of horror stories.

+1 to this. I had to remove my pleco from the tank when I found out it was feeding off my Sen. Bichirs slime coat. I tried to keep the pleco well fed when I first discovered he was doing it, but that didn't work. It got pretty bad, but my bichir has healed up nicely now.
Slime coating seems like the pleco equivalent of crack. If they start, they don't want to stop.
