I've had this guy for a couple years now. He's been my absolute favorite, even though a daytime sighting like this is rare. I had just cleaned the tank, which is really the only time he's not hiding behind something.

I've always just called him a 'royal,' but most pictures I've seen labeled as royals show fish with red eyes.

Thanks.

You know, that explains why he's never grown like I was told he would.

He seems to eat whatever falls into the tank. I have a large piece of driftwood that he chews on and eats the algae off of, and I feed him algae wafers and flakes. I also feed the other fish in the tank bloodworms and brine shrimp, which he seems to like as well. I've never had much success getting him to eat veggies, but I thought I'd try again.

Are all the pictures on that page of the same species? For instance, the first picture looks like my fish, but the second does not - his tail is different.

Thank you very much for the identification!

Yours is a cute little guy.
I've always been curious myself as to witch royal I have. I don't know much about plecos.

Royals are notorious for being slow growers.

They love wood. Bloodworms are brineshrimp are ok. You'd be surprised how little protein those foods have, but it can ruin your Royal. They need some protein, but they definatly need more vegetable matter than meaty foods. You should definatly try again with the veggies. My L-190 loves zuccini. I haven't tried anything else because of the success I had with the zuccini.

All the same except for the second link.

No problem. Glad to help.

I actually might be selling him. He just tares up my driftwood too much. It clogs my filter and
makes a mess of my tank. You can see all of the bits of wood above and in the gravel in that pic.
