i got one of those for free @ a lfs as a throw in package deal, i think its a butterfly high fin pleco? forgot what the guy told me

Sailfin pleco (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) to me. I see lots of gibbies with that similar pattern. If the dorsal fin seems long, it could indeed be a gibby.

If you have a side view you can confirm a gibby a gibby will have 10 rays on the dorsal others will have no more then 8

You are talking about how to distinguish Pterygoplichthys genus, not just gibbiceps.
