What am I...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got back from the worst pet store with what I thought to be an electric blue Johanni, but I am home and I have looked, and I still think he might be, but I am not 100% positive. Their lighting is terrible, and blue while I have a much more natural light in my tank. so in the store he looked BLUE!, but at home he looks purple.

I know the Dumb (Expletive Deleted) at the store did everything he could to freak the fish out trying to net him with the smallest net on earth, and he is still not quite calm after the ordeal.:irked:

This is good news I had a my 55 stocked with electric labs, but my job moved and had to give them away to make the move too... so I thought now would be the time to change breeds.
I am wanting to do a harem of Johanni & Auratus
Guess I got me a good Male Johanni? lucky me! but the only Auratus I could find only 2 in town & they were juv so I am not sure if ether are male yet. I haven't vented them.

johanni or maingano... the males look nearly the same, but female johanni are yellow or orange, while female maingano are difficult to tell from the males. chances are, if all the fish in the tank were blue (all the johannis that is) then you actually have a maingano (which is also called an Electric Blue Johanni). Maingano and actual johanni are two different species, so watch out!

maingano, johanni, and auratus will probably try to hybridize, since the patterns are the same and they dont seem to care about color. Auratus are among the most aggressive fish you can keep, not to mention among the most aggressive african cichlids. just make sure they are added LAST! good luck and enjoy your fish!

Finally got myself a DSLR so I can take some decent photos!

what do you guys think with a sharp pic!? Still Johanni?
