G'day people. I've just recently set up my new 220 as a African Hap/Predator tank. And after starting to buy new juvie Africans, I've started having 2nd thoughts. I've done Africans before, and I'll admit after awhile I started to get bored with them. So, I'm looking around here at some of these really cool ancient fish and wondering as the title states. The tank is a standard 220, 72x24x30 tall. Due to space limitations I won't be going to a bigger tank for at least a couple more years and I would want my fish to be happy and healthy. The tank is very well filtered and I don't have a problem doing a big weekly w/c. I'm thinking a nice big hunk of driftwood in the center reaching almost to the top, and a few smaller pieces and some plants scattered about. Thus giving lots of swimming space. I don't want a tank with only 1 or 2 fish, remember I'm used to waaay overstocked African tanks. Am I crazy for giving this some thought? I do like the big Gars, Arows, Birchers, Eels, ropefish, that kinda stuff. So what say you? What would be a good combination that won't kill each other, and keep my intrest?
Thanks.
Al.

I had the same tank actually. So your kinda looking for a peaceful predatory tank so to speak? An Arowana, the 2 South American species, can be comfortably housed in a 220. That's probably the smallest tank that can house them, but it is possible. The gar have granoid scales making them "stiff" and not very flexible so depth is a big issue with them, you can consider the Florida gar, as they are the smallest sp. There are many different species of bichirs that would be just fine, the rope fish on the other hand might be slender enough to be considered food. You can also look at many different catfishes, or some characins to that might interest you. Hope this helps!

Florida gar and/or some birchir will work fine, any arowana would need a wider tank!

Housing a 30" fish in that small a footprint is pure nonsense. Your definition of "comfortably" is way off.

ive also noticed whenever my arowana turns around he is almost in a c shape everytime even tho he has a good 10 inches of wiggle room

they ARE flexible fish.

Yes they are. They can turn around in a space about one third their length. So I guess i should be keeping mine in just a 12" wide tank, right? Silver aro are a very skittish fish, the more room you give them away from the front glass, the much more calm their demeanor is. Proper amount of space has more to do then just room to manuver.

Not to mention the OPs tank is way to short in length for a 30" plus fish. Be barely 2x the fishes length. Betta have it better off in the cups they are sold in then 2x the length.
