Because of their nature, tank mates aren't always with rhoms, which can make feeding difficult. I don't want to feed too much since nothing else will eat it, but I also don't want my rhom hungry. I've been feeding 2 41-50ct shrimp twice a day. My rhom is 10" and seems to be healthy, but not super thick. I am going to get him nighhtcrawlers to change up the diet a bit and also chicken. After he gets more comfortable I want to try to stuff his food with massivore.

Let's hear your feeding schedule

I have a baby rhom 1+" for a month, his main diet is nls .5 sinking pellets, i also use talapia every other day and sometimes tubiflex as a snack and hes grown quick and healthy.

Variety is a good idea so try fish fillets, i buy 4lbs bulk talapia fillets and thaw em and serve em.

My red belly piranhas get feed a rotation of raw (shelled) shrimp and talapia every other day and once a week maybe beefheart and omega one pellets, they love it!

Cant wait till my little guy hits the 3" mark!

Low nitrates good variety diet and adequate space makes a beautiful fish!

your rhom is 10" and you feeding twice a day?
at that size feeding once a week or even once two weeks will be fine, of course it also depends on the amount you feed per feeding.
If the rhom is fresh imported and very skinny then you can feed more frequent to put on some weight but if feeding too frequent then the fish will start to get "fat".
most of the fish that are being kept in captivity are "over weight" IMO since we all love watch our fish eat.

Well he isn't skinny, but he isn't as thick as he should be i think. he wrecks the shrimp before they hit the bottom so idk? that's why i ask lol. also just put giant danios and huge mango pleco in there so i want to keep him nice and fat. maybe keep this up for another week and let him chunk up a bit. so if u feed him only once or twice a week, how much do u feed? i mean do i want him fat like a p.bass that just saw feeders? or same amount just less often

I wouldnt rely on feeders, such practices can incur parasites and stunted growth, fish fillets, shrimp, pellets etc is my recomendation @ 1-2x per week max.

How is your water quality?? Id think high nitrates.

No Im using parts from my 500g on this, Im not worried about water quality. so far 0,0, under 20. i drop shrimp into the water above the power head he swims against and they slowly float down, hit the current and rocket at him and just before they smash him in the face he chomps them sending a piece of shrimp across the tank. because he eats so aggressively, i can't slow down until he eats less.

I feed mine once or twice a week. Mackerel, Herring, Smelt and Shrimp. I keep a few guppies in the tank and several large mystery snails to work on anything it does eat.
It moves every two or three between 180g and 120 g tanks when I do a massive clean out. Undergravel filters with a couple of airstones. A couple of bogwood with plastic plants attached.

The fish is in it's 31st year in my tanks. It is only about 10" to 11".

Are you saying that you've kept your rhom for 31 years!!!! Please tell more about this, pics if possible please...

@OP - sounds like the rhom is settling well. He will pretty much let you know his feeding schedule over the next few weeks. For now, just feed him whenever he will eat and you'll be fine. Rhoms don't over-eat and won't get fat before your eyes like a pygo.

I noticed he wont eat if he isn't hungry, but unlike most fish ive kept he will go for a shrimp that's been sitting for hours. Last night he ate one that was sitting for a good 4 hrs minimum. I'm going to get my buddy to hook me up with a ton of random seafood to vary the diet, but he loves shrimp.
