I feed mine hikari cichlid gold as a staple as well as many other things for treats such as blood worms, shrimp, crickets etc . But They don't seem real crazy about the pellets and was wanting to find a staple they really enjoy. Thanks

My kids will always take candy over veggies, but is this the way to go?

Live or frozen food will always be preferred (over dry pellets), but in an aquarium setting, live/frozen that will not be the most nutritious. A quality pellet food, like NLS, will provide your captive fish what they lack from food found in the wild (without disease and parasites). Make pellets your staple and live/frozen an occasional treat.

You need to be more specific about species.
Although a general pellet will work, some are piscivores, some vegetarian, some omnivores.
In nature Herichthys pearsei and bocourti are primarily vegetarian, so I grow hair algae in my ponds, and supplement with dandelions.

for more carnivorous types insects and worms are supplements.
The only thing I stay away from are feeder fish (unless you breed them yourself), because they tend to be disease and parasite carriers.

I bought some Jags couple days ago and these don't bother with pellet but they are eating bloodworm like crazy >.< I bet they got fed live food or mealworm only, after I quarantined them I'll put the dominant one in my display tank (the rest going back to LFS for store credit) and it will have to learn to eat pellet as main food and bloodworm every other day.

have you tried massivore? thats what i feed its like crack and steroids mixed. ive tried pretty much every quality pellet and this stuff gives me the best results in every area, except for the smell lol

had to put my Midas on a diet because I didn't realize I was feeding him the equivalent of twinkies and potato chips all day. Hunger strike ensued -He stopped eating. It lasted about 2 days. Diet change transformed him -his colors popped and he's very active. Now I feed him an assortment of foods that I try to mix up for variety. He still hates health food.

Their favorite is probably hikari but my favorite is nLS and Omega one I am phasing hikari out of their diet I want them all on nLS as a staple mixed in with Omega one battling a yellow acara at the moment that is being stubborn I also mix in romaine lettuce and shelled peas probably not enough though
