in a 55 gallon tank?

In a 55? None. Unless it is a growout. Oscars have a huge range of personalities, so you could try other sa/ca cichlids and see what works.

I have thought about a pleco(common) but would the oscar pick on it at all?

It's not going to be easy to find a fish that the oscar won't mess with in a tank of that size. They're fairly territorial so it'll probably want the entire tank to itself.

A big Oscar and a Pleco in a 55 gallon? Hope you like doing lots of frequent water changes. IMO an Oscar needs a 75 gallon minimum but I'm not the cichlid police. Good luck.

Yes, I do understand the water changes needed(at least once a week)

There is a chance that it'll outgrow the 55. I have an oscar that is 15", so it's just something to keep in mind.

I'd say twice a week with that crew. Oscars and Plecos are some of the most water polluting fish there are. You really need a 75.

If you must have a second fish I would have a male Con. Tough enough and quick enough for an Oscar, and light on the bioload. A much better option IMO than a Pleco.
