So I made a mistake setting up my brackish tank and most of my fish died from nitrite poisoning and I am planning out what will go in my tank next. I had a Purple Spotted Goby, seven Indian Glassfish and three Dragon Gobys.

All of my glassfish died during the nitrite spike and one of my dragon gobys developed a swim bladder problem from breathing surface air during this nitrite spike. Right now I have it at .3 mg/l and it is going down still and I am hoping by next week it should be finished with the cycle.

So originally I bought the purple spotted goby unaware that he is a viscious carnivore and shouldn't be mixed with smaller brackish fish. I wanted to get halfbeaks and acclimate some of my guppies to the tank, but there was no way that would happen with him in there. So I am thinking of getting more of a predatory tank.

Right now the tank is a 33L and I plan on upgrading to a 125 in the next couple years. I am trying to decide what kind of brackish fish I should put in my 33L (will be upgraded later) once the cycle is complete. I am thinking of rehoming my smaller dragon goby since my bigger one doesn't like him. Also, one of my LFS is ordering some brackish moray eels this week and I think I might be buying one for my tank.

So what other fish could I put in this tank? The substrate will be sand mixed with crushed coral, and I plan on adding a lot of lacerock or some kind of dead live rock.

Do you have any fish in there now? I highly sending back any fish you have & fishless cycling the tank. You can do permanent damage by cycling with fish. If you can't send them back, then use the article on Emergency Cycling:

33L (<9g) isn't even enough for a single BW fish other than a few bumblebee gobies. Your uncycled tank was/is still way overstocked. Please do a lot more research before embarking on keeping any of these species you are interested in.

I have three fish in the tank and they are doing fine right now. The only fish that seemed to slow down and act different died from the nitrite. I am just waiting for the nitrates to finish and then the tank will be cycled. My oldest dragon goby survived a complete cycle in a 29g. I know it's bad for the fish now and I made a mistake with the brackish tank so it wasn't supposed to do this.

Anyways, I meant 33 Long, not 33 liters lol. The 33 long is 4ftx1ftx1ft (same as a 55, just shallower). I must admit, I was very confused until I thought you mean liters lol. I would never make anything smaller than a 10g brackish due to constant maintennance needs.

I do know the PSP grows to about 7" so he would be fine, but I would rather have him in a 125 at that point. The dragon gobys grow to about 15" and the glassfish stay around 2-3".

Right now I have a PSP and two of the dragon gobys still. I am doing 30-50% water changes every day. The ammonia spike is long over, and now the nitrite spike is almost completely over. I believe it would stress the fish more to transfer them, than having them be in .3mg/l nitrite for two more days until there is no more nitrite. Plus I don't know anybody with healthy slightly brackish tanks. I don't think the slight nitrate spike will be too bad for the fish to go through and it's not worth giving my fish away for.

But anyways, I was looking for fish that would be okay in a 33 long for maybe a year and then could go into a 125 comfortably when adults that are not skittish.

Whew, I was really worried there for a moment! What's the SG in there now?
