Very true...that was my main concern. If you are going to invest more money in one fish, make it the dat. You're better off keeping smaller guys with your dat because they will be equal size in no time.

The one in his avatar? If so, that's an NTT (Thin Bar). You can probably find something in the 3" to 5" range for decent money. If you are looking to get something BIG, your best bet would be an IT.

Just to give you an idea of what I have mine with:

1.5" ITs with Ctenopoma acutirostre
3" ATs and 3" NTTs with Geos, Platys, and Barbs
5" ATs and 5" NTTs with Marbled headstander, Leporinus desmotes, Dormitator maculatus (Jade Gobies), Marbled Pim & Geos...always Geos.

I have several small <2" Dats with Giant Danios and have also had them with Black Tetras, but recently put the Tetras into a S. American setup. I had 5 small Siamese Algae Eaters with them but I think the dats may have killed them at night, though I never saw aggession during the day.

Also Clown Loaches, Yo Yo Loaches, Brazilian Rams, Angels the same size, Geophagus (G. surinamensis or S. jurupari best) and Rainbow Cichlids (Herotilapia) the same size should be ok. Rainbows get aggressive when breeding, otherwise they are rather timid.

Lots of plants and/or hiding places like flower pots or pieces of PVC pipe for the Dat to hide in a good idea.

IMO dats would work well.
