Been attempting to keep different types of mouthbrooders in shoals with the intention of separating pairs into their own tanks once they have paired up, but the fish spend the majority of their time chasing each other, making it difficult to evaluate if any pairs have been established.

The majority of mouthbrooders do not pair bond so you’ll have to specify which fish you’re keeping.

If you're keeping mouth brooding African cichlids they need to be kept in shoals, preferably female heavy, such as 2-3 males to 6-15 females depending on tank size & which lake & species you're talking about.
