I was just wondering what exactly are the benefits of a bio-wheel? I have a tidelpool 2 wet/dry with a bio-wheel, and I had a magnium canister that I am just using the bio-wheels on the return lines going into the tank. I know they are saposed to be benificial, but I was just wondering exactly what they do??

They have:
1) LOTS of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on
2) LOTS of oxygen (from all the air contact) for the bacteria to use to break down ammonia and nitrite to nitrate
3) LOTS of contact with water to expose the bacteria to the ammonia and nitrite to break it down into nitrate
THAT is the deal with bio-wheels. P.S. They work.

And added noise.

^True that although sometimes it can be a relaxing sound of cascading water.

I hope they work, or I wasted a bunch of PVC! Built this from old bio-wheels I had laying around.

What an imagination! Did you invent that?

I did build this monstrosity. I used to be a plumber (once a plumber, always a plumber?) so I have buckets of fittings laying around. It really does seem to work well, but I have a lot of other filtration going on, so it's hard to tell...
