I was examining my Flowerhorn the other day while feeding, and I'm not entirely convinced that what was labeled as a male is acutally a male. In front of the anal fin i noticed something protruding from the fish. Not sure if i'll be able to take a picture of it to post or not, but it almost looked like a small tube.
I know the only sure way to tell is to vent the fish, but with all of my experience with cichlids i've never done this before. I've always let them pair up naturally. Any advice? I know this picture doesn't show the area in question, but are there any indications in this shot that might make you think it could be a female?

Im almost sure that FH is a male, notice those fins and that humb, although there are females with nice humbs, this fish whole morphology points at male. Fins in females are sorter and less pointed.

Cool. He got pretty pissed off at me and the MagFloat the other day when i was cleaning his tank and started attacking the algae scraper. He also got dark bars across his back like my JD's would.
I eventually want to find a mate for him once he gets moved to a larger tank (at least 90 gallons), that is why I was concerned about the gender.
