hey guys! Im in the process of setting up a 300 gallon for my RTC! Im doing a little research on sumps/WD's! What I wanted to know is what are or is the most important elements in building a sump! Especially for such a large size tank! Thanks!
Most important is that it filters the tank good. Both mechanically and biologically. If you break that down bio is more important than mechanical. Because you can always vac out debris from the tank if needed. But if the bio falls short you will need to do many large water changes to compensate for that.
Next would be that it is easily maintained. Like easy to get to and easy to get the filter material out so it can be washed. And easy to get the pump out if anything where to go wrong with the pump.
Next would be adequate in size. And that goes for all area's as well. Bio-mechanical-pump You can make up for a size problem with turn over rate to a certain extent. But try not to waste space. Do not have twice as much room as you need for the pump. Make the pump compartment with just a small amount of clearance for the pump to set in and hosing. Then let the rest of the sump be for actual filtering.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Of course all of this goes back to planning. You must have a good plan to start with.
