What are these floating things?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could be detritus worms. Just keep up your water changes, gravel vacuum, reduce feedings and make sure no leftover food. Will clear up soon. Ur fish should eat with no prob.

I agree could be detritus worms or nematodes (or their larval form).
Overfeeding, and not enough water changes with less than appropriate vacuuming are usually the cause.
Many are benign yet unaesthetic, some can become parasitic.
Some just appear, some come in with plants, feeders, live food, snails, and a new un-quarantined new fish.

Tiny white string like filaments...appeared after a water change...what are they?View attachment 1297697
Did you clean your filter during the water change? Or have the filter turned off for a significant amount of time?

Some filters, such as the smaller Fluvals, let stuff build up inside the hoses. If you clean the filter, or let air in the system, then when you restart they spew similar looking white debris round the tank. It doesn't seem to harm the fish and clears up fairly quickly, but I've learned to put a net over my outlet when the filter starts up again.

Yes, it was from my fluval canister and right after I turned it back on after a water change. Any idea what it is? They kinda look like detritus worms, but not a single one of the white filaments was moving around or looked alive. Maybe filter floss that broke down? Either way, probably a good time to service my filter. Thanks for the help!

Hey Blades!....I think I'm gonna go with the stuff being fibers from the filter media, based on your description.
