Can anyone help to identify these things? They appear to be stringy and cotton-ish..
From the outside I only see the last foam full of these things hanging at the bottom probably due to the water flow which pushes them out..
I have attached pics for reference (first pic shows the water flow)

Looks like some kind of algae (filamentous?). I have seen this appear when you use water conditioners too much or if there are no live plants and there is a waste spike. Have you checked your water and saw any change in NH3 or NO3 or NO2?

1. your midas/reddevil is photo-bombing you in the first pic. lol! He's like "what the heck are you pointing to, what is the meaning of these arrows?" LOL!!! :)

2. Excess of Beneficial Bacteria, or bacterial overgrowth?

I did a quick search on filamentous algae and mine looked nothing like that especially the color.. Hmm, I tend to overdose on water conditioners but just a little over..
I also have some pothos plants in the filter..
I don't check my water parameters, usually I just see the fish behavior.. if it's acting strangely then I know something is not right.. Else the fish is doing fine and eats like a champ

Well, the sponges were in the filter for 2 weeks.. I'm not sure if BB grows that quick, let alone having excess of it..
But if it does, then I'm not complaining.. lol

By the way, when I take out the first layer of sponge to wash off the detritus, I see the same stringy cotton-ish things on the surface of the second layer of sponge..
