The LFS guy did say a name, but not too sure if that's what these are as haven't seen any juvi pics before. Right now they are less than 2".
What do you guys think?!

kinda looks like a Cyrtocara moorii

Yeah.... that's what the LFS guy told me.... and charged me a price more than usual for fish this size. I don't mind paying a bit extra, but it has to be worth! Hope they are indeed blue dolphins.... and not something else.

I was not meaning the tanzania star. I was refering to Protomelas annectens, often confused with dolphins if it is not a dolphin. The tanzania star has much more pronounced lines is a deeper blue without showing the spots of the dolphin.

I could be wrong but dont think those are BDs. Head isn't shaped right, the lips aren't pronounced enough, the finnage isnt the normal shape and the blue colouration leans too far towards purple, the eyes are also quite large. It looks like there may be some yellow coming in on the lips and underside in which case it's probably one of the peacocks.

They might be blue dolphin. I have one myself and I think I see some faint splotches that c moori have on your fish in the first photo. Also they have the same shaped lips. As the fish grows the lips will often become white and the head a bit rounder as it gains some size. It is also possiable it is a placidochromis species , they often will have some vertical barring on females and juvies. Both types of fish are blue. I believe the intensity of blue depends on the individual fish. My c. moori is extremely blue, bordering on navy blue and looks kind of glittery in photos. My c. moori is more than six months old and only now reaching more than 2 inches even though the only tanks it has ever been housed in are a 135 gallon six foot tank and more recently a 7 foot 265. These fish are extremely slow growing so that would be another thing for you to watch for in a c. moori. Here are a couple pics of my c. moori to compare with your fish. (its hard to see how dark blue he really is cause the flash reflects on his metalic scales)

@ cichlidgirl

Thanks for your pics..... I think my crappy webcam didn't show the actual look of my fish. The splotches are indeed there in my pair. The splotches tend to vanish when the lights are off at night... but comes back slowly when I put on the light in the morning. Also you are spot on about the metallic bit.... they are extremely blue but difficult to get that in pics sometimes as they have the metallic shine acting as a natural highlight sort of thing!

Also thanks everybody else for their inputs..... it was quite an eye opener to learn about the other similar looking species! (makes me feel such a noob though!!)
