like any snail, ive cultivated a lot of them now. i figure they pose as much threat as malaysian trumpet snails, but i just wondered what they are and found a reasonably big one so i could take a pic

I think it is Ramshorn snail (Planorbis corneus)


These snails will eat plants and leave nothing in their path of destruction. These snails are hermaphroditic, meaning they have the anatomy of both male and female in one snail. They are egglayers and will lay eggs underwater preferably on plants or decorations in the tank. Some are known to carry diseases.


But your Malaysian Trumpet snail (Melanoides tuberculata) is not the same. These snails are beneficial to planted tanks and will stir up the gravel. These are livebearing snails and are omnivorous. They have a conical brown colored shell and will burrow in the substrate. These snails will burrow during the day, and come out at night.
