I noticed these shallow holes and bumps on one side of my silver arowana about a week or two ago, so I have started doing more water changes since then (10-20g changes per day), but I haven't seen any improvement. Also, a few days ago my pacu bit both of the aro's pelvic fins almost completely off, so could the holes have been caused by aggression from the pacu?

Basic Questions

1. What is the size of your tank?

225 gallons, 72"x24"x30" (LxWxH)

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

I'm not sure tbh, I haven't tested them since I started doing daily waterchanged, but the last time I checked, nitrite and ammonia were both 0ppm, and nitrate was about 20-40ppm (I am very bad at trying to guess which color it is closest to), it is an API master test kit.

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

Fresh.

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

Since late July 2009.

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

All of my fish are listed in "My Tank Setup". I have had all of them for a little over a year, except for my LSN's, which I got in February of this year.

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

No, but no fish have been added recently.

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

80.6F

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

No.

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

Fluval FX5 and Rena XP4; both are thoroughly cleaned out with tank water about once per month.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

Just an air pump.

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?
My tank receives natural sunlight all day (it is in a sunroom), but I also use a light from 6:00a.m. to 11:30p.m.

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?
I change the water and vacuum the substrate almost every day 10-20g (whenever I miss a day, I change double the volume the next day).

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?
Hikari Cichlid Gold every night around 10pm-11:30pm, krill (frozen) once every two days in addition to the cichlid gold.

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?
Shallow holes and bumps on the scales of one side of the body. Otherwise completely normal behavior.

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.
Other than more frequent water changes, no.

My silvers occasionally get something similar to the pics of yours. They look like pimples. Not sure what the cause but on mine they usually heal up within a couple weeks.

Okay, thanks for the info.

Update: They are still there, and it looks like there are more of them now (but still all in the same area) although the aro's behavior hasn't changed at all. :nilly:

That must be something different then what my aro gets. It just got over a case of these "pimples" and the scaring looks different from yours. Tried to take a pic but they do not show up very well. The ones on yours seem to be much larger.

What about salt? You try some of that?
No, I haven't tried salt yet, but I think I might. I would have tried it by now if it was showing any other symptoms, but since it isn't, I'm not sure whether it's necessary to use salt.

If theyre bumps then it sounds like a parasite, which salt and raising the temp. would help with. I dont like saying go for a med, but if its getting worse you might have to use something. I would suggest trying a Formalin treatment (its getting harder to find pure Formeldahyde, but its the safest med for fish) but you can use PondFish treatment by Tetra, or you can use a zinc free Malchite green but make sure its zinc free!

With that being said, I would try salt, heat and large water changes (30% or more) every other day or so to start. The small changes might sound good, but there was an article put out in TFH a few months ago saying that they arent as effective as we all hoped they were. And for sure keep a close eye on all your other fish, not so much for aggression as for symptoms. Maybe even adding a Garlic supplement to your fish's food would be a good idea, the Garlic acts as an immune system booster.
