Hello--

I had a cycle problem after a water change a couple weeks back and my nitrite level was scaring me. I added Cycle, Prime and Stability according to directions.

The nitrite and nitrate are almost gone (ammonia was never an issue), but now I checked my filter and there are long, stringy things growing out from the media and down the water shoot--almost to the aquarium water level.

Did I over do the bacteria colony? I have a scheduled 25% water change and filter cleaning this Saturday where I'll rinse the media off with spent aquarium water---but I wondered if what I'm seeing is the (good) bacteria or some alien (bad)?

Thanks,

I'd just remove it. It doesn't harm anything but is unsightly.

I think its a fungus that seems to grow in new aquariums I had it for a while in my 55 never hurt anything. The only odd thing is that I had to run a weeks worth of rid fungus on my 55 and it did not eliminate this stuff. So I am inclined to believe it is not a fungus. Though I do not know what else it would be.... Never really got a firm answer but if its the white stringy stuff I think your talking about its not harmful.

Thanks. Before I clean it off, I'll try to get a picture of the stuff and upload it.

Yea the white stringy stuff is not harmful they get everywhere especially in the filter sponges in my tank they were not visible but when i did water changes they were all over the place. for some reason 6 months later they were gone.. I think they come when u overfeed ur fish...

Ive heard that theory before but I set up a brand new 55 gallon (all new accessories) and had that stuff 2 days after setting it up. Even if I did over feed them 2 days time is pretty short for a fungus like that to grow. It seems it is restricted to newer tanks is my experience on these forums.

I did the clean this weekend and the stringy things were algae growing on the water shoot. They looked stringy because of the water current making a formation in the pattern. Needless to say, it is all gone now.

Thanks,

Good to hear its cleaned up.
