I always assumed below 20 ppm was ideal, but after reading around it seems like it is more like 50 ppm.

My 55g tank has 6 goldfish in it, and I flip when it gets to 20 ppm. It is planted, but not too heavily (they eat them or dig them up). I think I'm being paranoid :chillpill:

What are the nitrate levels on your tanks usually at, especially right before your water?

If you can keep a well stocked tank's nitrates below 10ppm at all times, IMO your doing very well. personally, my tanks reach an average of 35ppm come water change day. I feed lightly, then heavily, depending on which day.

I hope for the good of everyone that someone doesnt have to vote for the last option in the poll.

It may hit 20ppm at the end of the week, but now that I'm doing water changes every 3-4 days, it shouldn't.

I love doing water changes, typically 10g at a time for the 55g. I find it fun, so I don't put it off or anything. I feed the goldfish heavily, although lots of veggies on certain days, which may not contribute to the nitrates as much as the other food.

I keep the back and one side of the tank covered in green algae, which I've always thought probably does a fair bit in utilizing the nitrates.

I think reading up on goldfish and how messy they are conditioned me...

10g water changes must be nice lol. im changing out 200g on WC day. my nitrates on my tanks get up to bout 40 on WC day on the big tank, smaller tanks only get up to bout 20.

I change water at 30 ppm or 380 PPM TDS whatever comes first. Average is generally around 20.

I have between 20 to 30PPMs nitrates out of my tap. Sometimes in mid-summer, when we are in a drought, the PPMs are higher. So my tanks are close to 100PPMs when I do my weekly 50% water change. I was doing WCs twice a week, but my busy lifestyle made it too hard to maintain that discipline.

Fish are doing ok though. The African Ciichlids are super colorful and I have only lost a few fish; primarily from aggression.

My African tank gets up to around 35. My discus and angle tank is planted and it only gets up to 25.

I think 20 ppm is ideal, and that is what I shoot for.
