What are your thoughts on mixing cichlids?

Some people have recommended not to put African cichlids with South American cichlids and others have said it's not a problem. What do people think? If it matters, it will be a bigger tank with places to hide, but somebody said they like different ph levels or something.

Captive bred african/ca/sa cichlids will thrive in a wide range of parameters, most will breed and live happily in regular conditioned tap water.... Unless you plan on keeping wild caught fish these parameters won't make a difference as long as the water is warm and clean.

I personally think you shouldn't mix the two because 1. It simply doesn't look good, 2. aggression

I might agree with the aesthetics for sure, once you start to learn fish and their origins. Most people don't know the difference between fresh and salt water though. :lol2: I am thinking of mixing a few different fish in a larger 300+ gallon tank, and maybe having a smaller rocky, tighter area for the smaller africans. Still pondering that though, but just wanted to know if they would actually be harmed by doing so, other than aggression. I have another smaller tank if that happens though.

What SA/CA cichlids did you have in mind? If you want some of the larger SA/CA's in with the Africans then I could definately see the some of the Africans eventually becoming dinner.
Rams, Kribs = Probably
Firemouths, Convicts, maybe even Severum with Africans = maybe...
MiDevils, RTM, RTs, GTs, and others that get over a foot long = No

I now have 2 5" oscars, small Midas, Flowerhorn, Convict, Red Tailed Honduran, 3 Gymnogeophagus, Jaguar, Turquoise Severum, Jack Dempsey, and Firemouth. I want to add a frontosa for sure, but the li'l Africans I can do without if it seems dumb to try.

I've never been crazy for mixing Frontosa and Butti with CA/SA, but to each their own.
I know Butti can be mean, but will a Frontosa be able to withstand a Jag? How big are your fish currently, are they still juvi?

Even if you don't add any africans into that mix you will likely run into trouble in the near future... I'm surprised you haven't yet. My advice: re-think your stock instead of adding anything else, especially not expensive fish like Frontosa... which also like to be in colonies.

Also, Gymnogeophagus species shouldn't be housed with those fish... they do better in/require colder water.
