I have a colony (13) of burundi frontosa- I have one 7 stripe with them as well.

Someone on another forum stated:

" its people like you thats going to wipe out the pure breed of fronts."

I don't understand why crossbreeding aquarium bred fish is such an issue.. It's not like we are putting these fish back in their natural habitat and inner mixing them with wild pure species.

Can someone explain this to me? I am at a total loss as to what to even think. I don't plan on breeding these fish, but I can't stop them from breeding either. I don't plan on raising any fry, and I don't plan on selling any that may end up surviving. I got them strictly for enjoyment.

Sometimes I just think that some people over react.

man people like that are just whack...like geez the frontosa are so closely related, it's your friggin fish tank do what you want with your life. I can understand why people dislike hybrids, but as long as your doing it safe its cool...

He/she needs to quit worrying about maintaining the "purity" of a species and focus more efforts towards grammar.

Not to get too upset with comments.

African cichlids, particularly Lake Tanganyikan cichlids seem to have a strong following of purists who are focused on keeping species tanks and expect others to follow them.
There are many who feel uncomfortable seeing a mix, and are even more sensitive if these are fishes that are likely to breed.

My view is that to avoid these unncessary comments, just don't show the Kigoma if you post pics, it's what I would do. They may have been upset because of hybrids showing up in the hobby such as "red" frontosas, etc.

Uhhh.... Technically, isn't President Obama a hybrid? Just saying.

People like that should relax. Hybrids are a necessary part of evolution and it's not like you're putting yours back into the wild anyways. I have two dogs. One black lab and one yellow lab/ golden retriever mix. Guess it's people like me that are going to wipe out the yellow lab and the golden retriever pure breeds right? Lol!!! Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your fish

If you don't plan to raise or sell the fry, then their interbreeding will have no effect on the Frontosa/Gibberosa market. Tell whoever that was to shut that gaping chasm of stupid they call a mouth if they don't have all their facts.

LOL, no, his parents are still of the same species. Although, if the OPs fish were both Cyphotilapia gibberosa, but from different parts of the lake, then Obama would be an apt analogy. But if it was a C. frontosa and C. gibberosa mix, then no. Hope that makes sense...

The Lord Voldemort of the Frontosas is rolling over in his grave.

The whole concept that is put out there is that when people cross-breed their fish, they may not think to tell the person that the fish is a hybrid. As more and more fish become endandered or extinct int he wild, the pure blood lines start to disappear. This is something that won't happen with one person, but with multiple people doing the same thing.

I prefer to have pure bloodlines in my tanks unless I know specifically that they are not pure bred. Similar to a flowerhorn. If I know it's a hybrid, then I keep them separated from the non-hybrid. Honestly, as long as you don't go distributing the cross-bred fry into the market, then you can do whatever you wish. I'm sure the person had good intentions, he apparently, just lacks tact.
