Will be buying a 220g, and want to keep my fine anti-algae team of SAE. I need a big cichlid that won't eat them. Furthermore I have some lovely bits of driftwood covered with java fern and anubias. I need a fish that won't gobble this up.

I have a problem. I can't find a suitable species of large cichlid. Eartheaters would work, but I'm a bit worried about them spending all day hiding. Discus are too fiddly. Angels too boring. Anything with a hump is ugly. I'm too picky?

Any suggestions for a singleton, a pair or a community? I have a divorced pair of Goldsaums, but might try them together again in a bigger tank. The 6" male dominates his 100g today, the 5" female dominates her 100g. Can't see this pair living happily with other cichlids.

Long-winded, this. The headline says all.

Thanks.

The saum is not a good choice. It will dig up the tank bed and damage your plants. In time it will also make a meal of your SAEs. I have kept EBJDs in planted tanks without any problems.

My JD doesn't damage any of the plants (Amazon Swords and Anubias) and actually seems to enjoy them and uses them as cover, they are placed around the outside of his cave.

id go with eartheaters. i just started keeping them and love them-theyre pretty active and some earth eaters get over 8 inches. depending on the species, you can keep them with severums, firemouths, and i keep mine with honduran red points.

of anything "big" it would have to be some geos, unless you want to consider something like angels to be big
