What brand of substrate(s) for a planted tank?

Any brand(s) in particular you guys recommend? Looking for something reasonably price brands. There are so many brands out there I dont know whats good.

What about layering? What different types of layers should I be looking for?

Layering is a pain IMO. I just run pure flourite. The new black flourites look really good.

The normal black flourite is very fine, but not quite sand. The black sand flourite is close to sugar sand.

I use a clay base layer (for iron and other minerals), then that eco-complete aqua-dirt stuff (you don't have to recharge it), then a thick layer of red flint gravel. works great.

another cheap option is soilmaster select / turface its about $15-$25 for 50 pounds. this may or may not work depending on what your keeping. its very light substrate. comes in black and many other colors.
