I purchased this cichlid from petco approx 3 months ago. It was in a tank with convicts and flowerhorn I got him or her for $5 and change sold to me as a convict. In the store it showed traits of flowerhorn with the 5 markings on its side so I jumped on the sale. Then when it arrived home the bars were thrown up immediately for a whole month then turned grayish black nd faded to almost all yellowish orange. Now it doesn't resemble a flowerhorn very much imo anymore but maybe a red devil? But I'm not sure so if anybody out there has any input as to what I may have here please help me out. And if sexing is possible please help out there as well. Thanks mfk btw when purchased was 1.5" now around 3.5"20160326_004532.jpg 20160326_004534.jpg 20160326_004532.jpg 20160326_004532.jpg 20160326_004534.jpg 20160326_004532.jpg 20160326_004534.jpg 20160207_204512.jpg 20160121_105620.jpg 20160112_190332.jpg

Some type of generic amphilophus hybred.

So it is a hybrid and not just simply a red devil, any idea what it may be a mix exactly of or is that just impossible to tell unless your the breeder I'm guessing. Thanks for that lightning fast response btw

Without knowing the lineage it's impossible to say. Most people on here refer to them as a midevil, as in midas x red devil cross. The beak type mouth is more reminiscent of a midas type face, but who knows what type of amphilophus it is for sure.

Thank you I think that's a pretty fair guess I had a feeling it was along those lines as well either way its a cool fish with a nice personality can't beat it for 5 bucks. Is it possible to figure out the sex without venting it.

No.
