  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice to know I will try the cyclopeeze route and we can compare the two to see if they have any real effect.

At least you'll know he'll taste good when he out grows the tank:D

try feeding lots of market shrimps and the occasional crayfish...i heard from some experts of the red tailed catfish had fed theirs with highly protein foods..they say that any crustatean would bring out the colors. And add some more different food into their diet consisting of the massivore pellets, shrimps, crayfish, crabs, any other pellets thats big enough for him to see...and add some vegetables into the diet.If they dont eat it just put it inside of a meaty type of food that they love.Good Luck with yours..=)

my expirience/knowledge of cats isnt all that great, but if they are anything like other fish, feeder goldfish are definately not the way to go!! To bring out color i find all hikari products to do the trick, also i personally feel that feeding raw shrimp with a little bit of the shell on it (i usualy leave the shell on every 4 shrimp 4 my P.'s) will bring out the color..but this is from my expirience with other fish not, cats.

he is too small for color he needs to be 2-3 ft for the red tail

Ummmm..... well the red has developed in my currenty rtc and others in the past right about 7-8". It will be like a dull pink to start with and I just feed mine krill and shrimp, and ocassional night crawlers. The color seems to go berserk and by the time they are 12" the color is dark red or almost like brick colored red. My MRTC has a slight red tint to his tail at 13", but you have to look at in a certain light to see it. My 15" rtc has a very lovely color to it's tail, and my 36" tsn x rtc hybrid has a very dark almost brownish red tail with spots all over it. He gets fed exclusively shrimp and worms for now. Looking into some type of frozen fish to feed him as the grocery store stopped selling frozen whole pompano that I was feeding him. Shrimp are way more expensive lol. Plus can you imagine have to put feeders in for a 3-4' rtc? you'd have to feed thousands of goldfish every week. about 12 cent a pop here the costs would be mind boggling. Get him onto shrimp now and expiriment with fish fillets later.

You could do what I plan on doing I have a few local ponds in the area and they are completly full of brim or blue gill depending on your geografical location .I will catch a few dozen on the w/e and freeze them for 2-3 days to kill any parasites or bacteria then thaw them out when it's time to feed.Alot of local bait and tacle stores also sell frozen herring ( large minnow) for 1.25 a dozen I plan on using these also .And of course the shrimp to round out the diversity of meaty items .Mussels and oysters all frozen also on occasion as well.

My RTC has a deep red tail and his other fins are rimed in pinkish white he's a little guy about 16in.He eats large cocktail shrimp crawfish and odd fish scrap, wife works at a seafood place
