ok so right now i have my 125 set up as an african tank however i am wanting to convert it to a blackwater SA tank and so have to find home for my africans however i have a 20g long that is sitting empty at the moment and i would possibly like to keep a pair or two of the africans i have in there so my question is since it is a long tank would keeping two pairs be possible and just put there territories on opposite sides of the tank or is this tank too small? (i have a pair of yellow labs and maingano that i would really like to keep and see if they will breed i also have a pair of livingstoni but dont really like them as much as the others)

ok so i just read that the yellow labs get to be 8in! is this true?! is so then they will definitely get to big for the 20g L? so should i just keep the maingano pair in there alone or maybe get him another female? and i know plants can be kept with the yellow labs but can i do a planted tank with the mainganos?

I would suggest a few dwarf Mbuna, Labs get too big. Look into Demasoni, Saulosi, those are nice. Ultimately any of the bigger AC's will outgrow that tank very quickly and it will be cramped.

good luck!

ok yeah thats what i as worried about, since before i had them in a 125 i didnt really look to closely into how big they got since i knew they would be fine in that tank but now that im wanting to do that tank as SA cichlids i was looking closer into which ones would work in the 20L, so i now know the labs will get too big but i read that the mainganos only get 4in so would they not work in there? i do like demasonis and hadnt seen saulos but from the pictures they were very pretty (pictures were kind of confusing so does the male look similar to demasoni and the female is yellow?) and can these be kept with plants? any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

nobody have any other suggestions on dwarf cichlids that could be kept in 20L with plants?

you can keep fry in there as a growout. 20 long is really to small for any lake malawi cichlids. Look into lake tanganyika shell dwellers. Or a pair of german blue rams would fit nicely with your planted tank.

goldfish do real well in 20gl.

thanks everyone i just thought that maybe since it had a bigger foot print than a reg 20g that it would work but i guess not, i def dont want goldfish LMAO but i just figured since im switching big tank to SA could keep some of my africans but i guess not, those blue rams and occelatus are pretty though may look into those and all the shell dwellers (besides the occelatus) i have seen arent that colorful are there any others with some nice colors to them? but yeah also should keep in mind the fry growout thing as i plan on keeping a pair of severums though i am getting them young so it would be quite a while before they bred... oh well anyone have ideas of a nice looking fish besides cichlids that would work (besides the usual, neon tetras make me gag, lol)
