After many test runs and adjustments, i've finally got my 100gallon with custom w/d sump up and running. The only problem i'm left with is the overflow is very noisy due to the distance the water is falling. I tried adjusting the height of pipe inside the overflow but then my water volume goes down and can't keep up with my pump. If anyone has and idea's, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

Add bio balls to the top, with a floss pad on top of the bio balls???

1. Extend the PVC to a higher level in the overflow chamber. You can go to just below the slits in the overflow
2. Do a google search on the Durso Standpipe or the Hofer Gurgle Buster. They will effectively reduce the noise of he overflow.

:iagree:

Do you use a ball valve on your return plumbing from your pump? You can try that to restrict flow so your overflow pipe can keep up. Like Pharaoh mentioned, build a durso. You'de be blown away at the difference in noise. I was.

Do what i did get i got a piece of tubing and the pipe that sucks the water into the filter of aqua clear 110 or 70 and put into the drain hole of the overflow box. OMG what a difference this made it is unbelievable. You may need to poke holes into the piping you are adding but it ll depends on your sump and pump

Yeah, i've got a ball valve on my return line, but i don't want to have to throttle it off too much as i'm trying to keep my intended 10 turnover rate.

The fact that you overflow can't keep up is an issue that needs attention before the noise. Count how long it takes for me to get flamed by newbees for saying this but 10x turnover is high for a sump on average. I dought "most" members are pulling that kind of turn over from their sumps. Not trying to derail your thread, just trying to help.

As far as the noise, I really do think the durso will be your best choice.

Not a problem, this is my first setup and i'll take any advice i can get. I choose ten as my turnover rate because i read on this forum that 5 was minimum for keeping Oscars. I had to pick something to start with so i thought if i could go double the minimum that would be more then enough. I've also got the impression from MFK that you can't have too much filtration. My bottleneck right now is my overflow GPH. I tried adjusting the size of the overflow once. I don't know what else to do. I can't get enough for a 10 turnover rate. It works fine with the return line throttled off a bit.
