I'm curious what I could have in my eel tank as far as reef type stuff?

Anemones? Polyps? Any kinda sea life BESIDES fish?

The tank is a 6 by 3 by 1.5. Just looking to try to add some color. My girl expressed some interest in a reef type system and to be honest I'm completely clueless as to if it's something that will even stay alive with eels.

The eels range from 18 to 48 inches.....

I don't mind adding some lighting but really don't want to get into the whole supplementation thing but guess if it's not too time consuming I'd give it a try.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice...... :)

eels are reef safe...meaning they don't go around eating corals and stuff...the only problem you will have is that when they move around they may topple your corals or crush them...So I'm guessing that you can keep some zoas and mushrooms with eels since they are hardy...

Depending on the Eels you have you can keep most coral fish with them. I have two snowflake eels and I have kept them with clowns, trigger, gobys. However Anemones I would not recommend they will sting the eels and the eels will jump out of the tank.

that is so true my friend!! it happen to a buddy of mine and the eel died... 1,000 bucks down they tube....

I have seen eels been kept in many reef tanks with all sorts of corals, usually i hear the biggest prob is constant water changes due to the eels high bio load.

as other have said eels are pretty harsh on coral life... if you have BIG pieces of rock and can epoxy the rocks that coral come in on to them i think you'd be alrigfht getting some large colonies of hardier corals... leathers, toadstools, shrooms, and the like no problem

T5 lighting, it's relatively cheap and puts out a good bit of light.. if you stick to soft corals supplimentation isn't a necessity

10K lighting? The LFS is telling me all I need to do is just use my standard lights with 10K bulbs in them. But they are also insisting this kinda stuff is b3est left in the sump.

I have a huge pile of rock in the center of the tank and just plan on putting the stuff on top the pile. This should get it pretty close to the surface of the water and should be left alone up that high.

Thanks for the replies guys.....

if you DON'T want coral... normal output lights isn't good for any corals

power compacts are pretty minimal, T5's are brighter, but the same price as PC's.. that's why i like em

I would say you could stay very safe while adding light to your current fixture. and you can have a softy reef that would go easy on your eels.
i use two 48in. T12s . one in actinic and the other in 15,000 or 18,000 K. levels if I remember right. I have mushroom, zoos, capnella, gsp and clavaria to name a few in my tank. 110 tall. but lighting wasnt my issue when I combined my fowlr and reef together.
BTW: no disrespect, just wanted to show I did things different. and that was 4 years ago. the corals are 8 years old from my previous 29gal. reef.
