i need some ideas on what to use for a filter project. i am going to be hanging a small "sump" inside of the tank. i wasn't sure what metals would be safe if any or what type of plastic are easily molded. also what can be used as fasteners(screws/bolts) for connecting plastics together. last when using PVC piping is all color ok and if parts are submerged is the glue safe or what do you use to connect pieces.

thanks in advance

Umm, for connection of bits of plastics or acrylics use a silicon approved for usage in water, I'd steer clear of metals but you can use stainless steal, it won't rust. It doesn't matter if the pvc is white, orange - hell, it could be bright pink.

As mentioned stainless fastners, regular pvc cement and acrylic cements for plastics. Check building acrylic tanks in the sticky at the top of the page

thanks, hopefully i'll be posting plans and pics of my project soon. still a little self concious :)

Not all stainless will not rust. 400 series stainless steels contain a lot of carbon and will rust and are magnetic. A simple way to check is to hold a magnet to it. If it doesn't stick, you should be good to go.

very true...two most commonly used stainlesses are 304 and 430...just make sure u get the 304. if u have any questions just take a magnet with you. if the fasteners stick to it don't use em and make sure they're stainless not aluminum.
but to avoid all of this i'd just use GE silicone I. it's cheap, easy to use, and great for fish and plants.
as far as pvc cement goes let it cure for at least a few days. all the toxic whatnots in it will cure and evaporate by then and is then fish safe.
